Playa Iguanita: A Serene Beach Getaway

If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica, make sure to include Playa Iguanita in your itinerary. Located in Guanacaste which is a province of popular beaches like Coco & Tamarindo, Iguanita is lesser known beach. It offers a blend of relaxation, great views and calm water. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to get there and some of the activities you can do.

    playa iguanita guanacaste

    How To Reach The Beach

To arrive at Playa Iguanita, you’ll have to take Route 253 north from the town of Comunidad. As you drive along this well paved road, cutting through farmer fields, you drive for about 10 minutes. Keep an eye out for a sign that directs you to turn left for Playa Iguanita. On Google Maps, you’ll look for this road which is called Acceso Playa Iguanita. This road starts off as a bumpy but flat gravel road which requires a bit slower driving. You’ll get to a Y Junction and remain to the right.
This is where the road requires a 4 x 4, especially in rainy season. You’ll begin descending the terrain towards the beach and one section of road is fairly loose dirt. This road was easily driven with a 4 x 4, but if the conditions were slightly worse a vehicle with low clearance would struggle. At the bottom of the hill, you can expect fairly easeful driving for the remainder of the trip. There’s an open parking area tucked right up to the beach so you can keep an eye on your car while you relax.

    Arrival At The Beach

You’ll be impressed with Playa Iguanita’s view of Culebra Bay. On the right side you’ll see the Papagayo Peninsula. This area is home to several resorts like the Andaz Costa Rica, Four Seasons and Planet Hollywood. You’ll also be able to see the Papagayo Marina, which has some massive yachts on occasion.

Along the right side of the beach you’ll see great landscapes which run all the way to Playa Panama. Closing off the Culebra Bay on the left side you’ll be able to see Playa Bonita. The land which run along the sides of this beach create a calm and very swimmable beach.

Playa Iguanita is also great for exploring. If you venture along the beach to the south, there’s some trails which run to the back of an estuary. The clear water is great to look at, but don’t swim here. There are signs warning of crocodiles, although I haven’t seen any during my time there.

I recommend bringing a cooler backpack like this one on Amazon if you’re going to be exploring some of these secluded beaches in Costa Rica. You can fill it up in Comunidad before hitting the beach. Then, if you find a great spot to relax away from the parking area, you won’t have to carry a big cooler.

Pick up a pair of these awesome water shoes. I’ve been using them all over Costa Rica during my travels. They have vented soles so water drains right out the bottom!

Things to do at Playa Bonita

    Swimming And Sunny Relaxation

Iguanita is a gorgeous crescent-shaped beach. With its soft white sand and sparkling turquoise waters, this beach is a paradise for swimmers and sun-seekers alike. But what really sets Playa Iguanita apart is its peaceful and secluded atmosphere. Unlike some of the more crowded beaches in the area, this off-the-beaten-path beach is a quiet oasis, surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking hills.

    Visit The Estuary

At the south end of Playa Iguanita, you’ll find a fascinating estuary that’s home to a variety of unique wildlife. This area has dense mangroves, which provide a crucial habitat for birds, fish, and other creatures. Among the inhabitants of the estuary are crocodiles, which are an impressive sight to behold but also a reminder to be cautious when exploring the area. Due to the presence of these crocodiles, snorkeling isn’t a great idea in the nearby water. Sometimes crocodiles venture out of their estuaries during rainy/murky conditions.

    Camp At The Nature Reserve

If you’re a nature lover looking for an authentic adventure in Guanacaste, don’t miss the chance to visit the Iguanita Natural Reserve and Camping Area. located between the public parking area and the estuary, this reserve is a haven for all kinds of wildlife. You’ll be amazed by the monkeys swinging through the trees, the colorful birds chirping in the distance, and the fascinating reptiles sunning themselves on rocks. Sleep under the stars, wake up to the sounds of the jungle, and explore the nearby trails that lead you through the beautiful forest and along the river.

Where To Stay Near Playa Iguanita

If you’re planning to visit Playa Iguanita, you’ll have plenty of options for accommodation nearby. The closest options are the resorts on the Papagayo Peninsula. If you stay at the Planet Hollywood resort you’ll be just up the beach from Playa Iguanita.

For lower cost beach options check out some of the boutique hotels and resorts at Playa Panama and Playa Hermosa. Condovac is a large hotel/resort development at Hermosa which is very popular. You can also stay at El Mangroove at Playa Panama.

  • Playa Bonita: Hidden Paradise Beach

    Playa Bonita: Hidden Paradise Beach

Playa Bonita is an incredible and quiet beach located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It’s a perfect place to relax and enjoy an incredible view with perfect water. I consider it to be one of the best beaches in Guanacaste as it’s less crowded and has a super peaceful atmosphere.

If your vacation is at the nearby resorts of the Occidental Papagayo or Papagayo Golden Palms, Playa Bonita is a perfect beach to visit by walking. Some other nearby resorts are Condovac, Secrets and El Mangroove. If you’re visiting from these, you can bicycle, drive or get a taxi.

Before you leave for your trip to Costa Rica, visit our Shop Page with a great packing list. You’ll find stuff I find useful while I’m travelling Costa Rica, especially for the days at the beach.

    Where Is Playa Bonita

Playa Bonita is located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the province of Guanacaste. It’s on a peninsula which splits the beaches of Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama. Both of these beaches are well known for their incredible water and tranquil atmosphere.

You can drive to Playa Bonita from Playa del Coco as well. Simply take Route 159, and as you come over the hill out of Playa Hermosa you’ll turn left. The roads to Playa Bonita are all paved and in good condition.

If you have a paddle board or kayak, you can reach Playa Bonita very easily. Make sure it’s not too windy so you don’t get pushed off course.

    playa bonita in guanacaste

    A Hidden Entrance

After you drive past the Occidental Papagayo Resort, you’ll reach the end of the road. On the right side, there’s a new house that’s very large and overlooks the bay. There’s also a gate to prevent vehicle access from continuing on. This gate controls construction for a new resort which is being developed at Playa Hermosa. Between this gate and the new house, there’s a path which I’ve shown in the photo below.

There’s a path which will take you down to Playa Bonita. The path itself is short but there is a section where it becomes fairly steep. Watch you footing as you go towards the beach.  If you’re planning on spending a few hours or the day at Bonita, you will definitely need to bring some cold water and snacks. Going down a path like this one can be challenging with a cooler in hand. I suggest bringing a cooler backpack like this one on Amazon. It keeps your food and water cold, and your hand free for the hike.

Dreams Resort and El Jobo: Ultimate Beachfront Bliss

Looking for an amazing beach right beside an all inclusive resort in Costa Rica? Check out Playa El Jobo and the resort Dreams Las Mareas. This spot is on the northern Pacific side of Costa Rica in the Guanacaste Province. It’s about a two hour drive from the Liberia International Airport.

This area has plenty to see and do. There’s many beautiful beaches to explore, small fishing villages and excursions to inland areas. It’s also very close to the border of Nicaragua if you’re trip takes you north.

Be sure to check out our Packing List for great stuff that I use in Costa Rica. At the beaches it’s important to use sunscreen, check out the roll on option in the shop!monkey dreams las maraes

White faced monkey spotted in the trees at Dreams Las Maraes. There’s a lot of monkeys in the trees around the resort.

    Getting There

You’ll likely be starting your vacation landing at the Liberia Airport. This is a great airport that gets you closer to the beaches in Guanacaste, skipping the traffic around San Jose. From there head north along Highway #1 towards Nicaragua.  There are two way to get to El Jobo, the first is turning sooner off Highway #1 at Highway #14. This will take you a bit longer to arrive, but it’s worth the drive. You’ll head through several smalls towns, and have some amazing views to check out.

Be sure to stop at Mirador de Playa Bassey for an amazing view of the Gulf of Santa Elena. This road is very choppy and I recommend an SUV as there’s many gravel sections with potholes. The second route is to stay on Highway #1 for a bit longer, and turn in a town called La Cruz. This town has restaurants and shopping which are great to stock up on items you’ll need at the beach. Items for sale at Dreams Resort are very expensive, so be sure to think about what you’ll need while you’re in La Cruz.

Either way you take, you’ll arrive on the same road leading into Playa El Jobo. This road is also very pitted out and has tire-busting potholes, so drive carefully.

For more information about landing at Liberia Airport, check out our guide on the blog.

    Playa El Jobo

El Jobo is the beach that is in front of the resort. It’s a fantastic white sand beach with groomed sitting area. There’s lots of space to relax and hang out. The water itself is shallow, so it’s great for swimming. The beach is contained within a crescent bay, so you can expect at high and low tide to have calm conditions.

Given that the beach is public, you will find vendors there. From small trinkets to fishing charters/jet skis, you’ll be able to find something to do while you’re there. There’s a restaurant called Lapa Lapa which is open to the public just on the beach as well.

For parking, just drive past the front entrance to Dreams Resort, and you’ll find a small public lot. It’s a very short walk to access the beach from there.

    Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica

Dreams is a 4 star all inclusive hotel that has great reviews and has very nice grounds. There’s lots of pools to check out with different vibes, and really nice accommodations.

The resort has well groomed grounds which are great for your wedding venue. We had seed a wedding set up at the pools and on the beach.

One of the best things to see is the many monkeys that hang out behind one of the buildings. We had the opportunity to see some white-faced capuchins. These curious creatures will come up and say hello, both at the trees and on your balcony. There’s also howler monkeys that hang out in the area.

  • Excelsior Ocean Cruise: Awesome Day Trip

Excelsior Ocean Cruise: Awesome Day Trip

Visiting Costa Rica? A very popular excursion is to charter a boat and check out some cool beaches in the area of Playas del Coco. For this trip, we jumped on the Ocean Excelsior trimaran. This boat is very unique, as it has three hulls to keep it very stable on the water. It also has a water slide and open deck on the top.

This cruises departs from Playas del Coco, which is in the Guanacaste Province. It’s only about 30 minutes drive from the nearest international airport. If Costa Rica is on your list of vacation destinations, El Coco and the beaches around should be at the top of your list!

Before you book your flights to Costa Rica, visit our Shop Page. I have great stuff that I use while I’m travelling and filming.

    What’s On The Boat

If you’re looking for some drinks on board, this boat has an open bar. You can enjoy cocktails, drinks, beer, soda, juice, and water while you relax on the boat. If you start to get hungry, there are snacks like fruit, chips, pico de gallo, rice, and chicken. I recommend to bring some of your own snacks and drinks as well as the lineup for food can take some time.

The real fun starts when you get in the water. Keep an eye out for dolphins, stingrays, whales, and turtles on the water while you head to and from the beaches. Once you arrive at the beach, you can go snorkeling and explore marine life in the Papagayo Peninsula. The beach you go to may vary, but you can expect to see some monkeys in the trees.

During the trip you can enjoy some music and dancing on the boat. This boat cruise is the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. You’ll also be able to enjoy the sunset when the boat stops out off the coast. Then it’s off to drop off the passengers on their beaches of departure.

Pick up a pair of these awesome water shoes. I’ve been using them all over Costa Rica during my travels. They have vented soles so water drains right out the bottom!

    How Much + Where

On the day that we took this boat, it had picked up/dropped off passengers at both Playas del Coco and the Riu Guanacaste. In these locations on shore, you’ll meet the boat staff and get your wrist bands. This boat has a loading ramp and is able to pick you up right off the shoreline. Most boat cruises require taking a small dingy boat into deeper water to board.

The cost for the trip was $90 USD for adults, and $40USD for the kids. It’s well worth the cost for the amount of activities, the view and the food.

  • Liberia Shopping: Big City Costa Rica

Liberia Shopping: Big City Costa Rica

Liberia is a medium sized city in Costa Rica, Guanacaste. It’s a 10 minute drive from the International Airport. If you’re heading to Playas del Coco or Tamarindo, Liberia is a great location to go shopping for some supplies and gear to get the best out of your trip.

Many coastal towns are sparse for shopping options. Liberia has lots to choose from: Supermarkets, Surplus Stores, Car Parts and Department Stores. It’s a larger town but never really feels too busy.

Our family enjoys heading into Liberia once in a while to walk the town, checking out thrift stores and art supply shops.

Check out our video of an ambient walk through Liberia to get a sense of the town HERE

El Rey – Super Discount Store

The first store we’ll check it is El Rey. This store is tucked back off the main road. It’s easy to miss as you drive by, but well worth stopping to check out.

It’s a store with just about everything. The part the kids love most is the massive section of candy. There’s treats we’ve not seen anywhere else, and the kids love grabbing some bags of candy.

El Rey has houseware at a price you’d see at dollar stores in North America. There’s some low price clothing as well. They also have a decent selection of small tools like screw drivers, drills and car parts.

    Ekono – Nice Department Store

Ekono is a department store that has a bit higher prices, but offers more trendy and higher quality items. You’ll find Ekono’s in larger cities like Liberia, San Jose, Puntarenas and Jaco.

A comparable store we had in Canada is The Bay, although Ekono’s are generally smaller. You’ll find similar stuff like clothing and houseware.

If you’re into fitness, you can also find some smaller items at Ekono. There’s quality yoga mats, kettlebells and dumbbells for your beach workouts. You can expect prices a bit higher than what you’d find on Amazon in North America, but that’s the case with most imported/heavy goods here in Costa Rica.

Ekono in Liberia is on the main road as well, a short walk up from El Rey. There’s lots of on street parking in the main road, as well as the side roads. Check out some of the restaurants in the area as well (Foodnication and Twenty’s are great options).

Toys! A Lot of Toys, Actually

Head north in town a few blocks and you’ll find the area of the bus terminals. There’s a lot of options for shopping around there, but the one that the kids love the most is Toys.

This three story toy store has loads and loads of toys, from building blocks, puzzles, toy cars, and stuffed figures. Kids really enjoy walking through the store and seeing all these toys in one place.

Toys is a very unique store in Costa Rica and we’re fortunate to have it so close to the beaches on the Pacific.

  • The Monkey Trail: Adventure Driving

    The Monkey Trail: Adventure Driving

Most of the roads in Costa Rica are paved and well maintained. You can reasonably expect to visit many beach towns and other locations with ease during your vacation.

There are some roads that are a little rougher, and require a versatile vehicle. The Monkey Trail is one of those roads.

This route is situation in the coastal area of Guanacaste. It passes through the mountains between Potrero and Playas del Coco. The Monkey Trail is a fun way to go between these two beaches.

    A Shortcut, Sort Of

The Monkey Trail can save you a bit of time if you’re heading down the coast in Guanacaste, but only a little bit. If you’re staying in Playas del Coco, or at the Riu Hotel at Playa Matapalo, and going to Potrero or Flamingo, The Monkey Trail will be shorter.

If you’re heading to Tamarindo or farther, then the primary routes will be faster. This includes trips from the Liberia International Airport. You’ll take Route 21, which will take you through several small towns like Belen.

If you just landed in the Liberia Airport and you’re looking to get to your resort quickly to relax – Route 21 is probably the better option. Some resorts you may see are The Westin or Margaritaville in Playa Flamingo.

Pick up a pair of these awesome water shoes. I’ve been using them all over Costa Rica during my travels. They have vented soles so water drains right out the bottom!

    Water Levels May Vary

The Monkey Trail does cross through a river at one point. This river can have fluctuations in the depth of the water. Not only that, but even if the water appears to be a similar level, the river bed depth can change and move. Drivers may cross the water along a certain path only to get stuck the next time as the high points have changed.

You’ll see lots of vehicles in Costa Rica with snorkels coming off the engine compartment – this allow the engine to continue pulling in air while the vehicle goes through water above the hood. We’ve only see a couple occasions where this would be necessary going across The Monkey Trail.

Most of the time, passenger cars can pass through the trickle of water. If you’re unsure about the depth, wait until some other seasoned drivers go through.

    Scenic Views And Quick Driving

With the river out of the way, the remainder of The Monkey Trail is an amazing drive. You’ll be heading up and down the terrain, which will afford you some amazing valley views.

    Check Out Playas del Coco

One of my favorite beach towns in Costa Rica is Playas del Coco. It’s always growing and home to lots of amenities and activities. It’s a very short 30 minute drive from the Liberia International Airport. You’ll find lots of options for accommodations at every budget, and many different styles of restaurants to enjoy.

While the beach in Playas del Coco is nice, there’s many renowned beaches very close. For example, a short drive south and you’ll find the black sand, calm water beach called Ocotal. This beach is great for relaxing and snorkeling.

Just to the north, you’ll find beaches like Playa Hermosa, Playa Penca and Playa Calzón de Pobre. These beaches are incredible, with Hermosa being the most busy. They are all a short distance from El Coco and a great place to stop during your tour of Costa Rica & Guanacaste.

FAQ About The Monkey Trail Costa Rica

Q: What is the Monkey Trail?
A: It’s a backroad connecting Playas del Coco to Potrero and surrounding beaches. The route includes a river crossing and mountain roads with ocean views. It can save about 30 minutes compared to the main highway.

Q: Is the Monkey Trail safe to drive?
A: In dry season (December-April), most vehicles can manage it with caution at the river crossing. During rainy season (May-November), it can be dangerous or impassable. The mountain section is always steep and narrow.

Q: Do I need a 4×4 for the Monkey Trail?
A: In dry season, most vehicles can cross with careful driving. In rainy season, you need a lifted 4×4 with a snorkel, and even then it might not be passable if the river is high.

Q: Is there an alternative route?
A: Yes, the Congo Trail bypasses the river crossing but requires about a $10 purchase at the local store as a passing fee. The paved highway route takes about 30 minutes longer.

Q: What are the driving conditions like?
A: The trail has three main sections: a short dirt road, a river crossing, and steep mountain roads. The mountain section has tight turns and narrow points where only one vehicle can pass. Best to drive during daylight hours.

Q: When is the best time to use the Monkey Trail?
A: Early morning in dry season is ideal. The river is lowest, visibility is good for the mountain section, and you’ll encounter less traffic. Avoid during or after heavy rains.

Q: Is it worth taking the Monkey Trail?
A: If you’re comfortable with rough roads and want to save time between Coco and Potrero/Flamingo/Tamarindo, yes. The ocean views are great. If you’re unsure about driving rough roads, take the highway.

  • Surf In Tamarindo: Waves For Everybody

Surf In Tamarindo: Waves For Everybody

Visit Tamarindo Beach in Costa Rica. This tourism hot spot has great surfing, restaurants and shopping. Tamarindo is about a one hour drive from the Liberia International Airport.

Tamarindo has great ocean front accommodations like Tamarindo Daria. There’s also many short term rentals available on Airbnb as well. You can expect to pay more for ocean front accommodations, but the walk into town isn’t that far.

    Known For Surfing!

The west coast of Costa Rica is spotted with many beaches which are great for surfing. Tamarindo not only has big waves for the advanced, but also small waves for kids or beginners.

If you’re a beginner and want to get some lessons, there’s lots of options available. On our visit, we spoke with some of the lifeguards who pointed us in the right direction. The beach has lots of surf instructors who generally have the same offerings.

For each kid that took the class, we paid $40 USD. This included a surf board suitable for the size of the child. The lesson begins on the sand with how to stand on the board properly. Then the remainder of the time is spent in the water with an instructor.

    Kids Will Love it

The kids loved the surfing lessons. Having an instructor hold the board while the waves rolls in helps the students learn the basics of how to stand up properly.

We found the value of the lesson to be very good. If you want to practice surfing for the first time be sure to check out the awesome instructors on the beach in Tamarindo. If you’re going to catch some great videos pick up the latest GoPro for up close shots.

    Stay Safe In Tamarindo

Tamarindo is a very busy town, with lots of opportunity to explore and have fun. If you’re heading to the beach, be sure to leave your valuables in your hotel. Petty thefts do occur. Unless you’re sitting with your stuff, it’ll wander off. I’ve even had my cheap flip flops stolen while I was in the ocean in Costa Rica. If you’re travelling solo, grab a Waterproof Fanny-pack to store your hotel key and some spending money.

The night scene in Tamarindo is very fun and exciting as well. As the sun goes down, it seems as though everyone from town heads to the beach. The sunset is always amazing in Tamarindo. There’ll be fires lit up and the partying begins. If this is your scene, be sure to be safe. Stay with known friends and always know your way back to your accommodations.
