While your driving down the main strip towards the beach in El Coco, look out on the left for Rich Coast Diving. Just after, there’s a prominent left turn that will take you towads Ocotal and Gringo.

Check out our Shop Page with some necessities for your trip. We have great options for snorkeling enjoying the sun at these popular beach destinations.

    Playa Ocotal

Playa Ocotal is under a 10 minute drive from the downtown of Playas del Coco. It’s an incredible beach that often less busy. The beach is surrounded by lush mountains that will often feature howler monkeys looking for food. It’s a great place to relax and watch the ocean, as there’s lots of areas for shade under the trees.

The water at Playa Ocotal is incredible. The beach is angled away from the Pacific so the waves are far more gentle than some other beaches in Costa Rica. This also lets the water be clear most of the time. There’s incredible swimming and  snorkeling at either end of the beach. If you head to the south(left side) of the beach, there’s some shallow alcoves that are far enough offshore to see some very unique fish.

Be sure to protect your skin during your day at Playa Ocotal. Pick up a Sunstick, that is sunscreen in a roll on format. It’s a great way to apply sunscreen for your time at the beach.

    Playa Gringo

For a little more adventure, you have to check out Playa Gringo. It’s right next to Ocotal, and the entrance to the hike is close along the way from El Coco. Make sure to bring a lot of water, since there aren’t any stores or restaurants along the way. The trail is marked pretty well and isn’t too tough, but it’s still got some steep sections. But the payoff is huge once you get to the top of the hill and see the coastline stretching out before you.

Once you’re at Playa Gringo, it’s like you’re in your own little secret paradise. The beach is quiet, with these amazing rock formations and cliffs all around. And the water is perfect. Just keep in mind that the waves can be a bit strong, so be careful if you’re going for a swim.

Held annually in the capital city of San Jose, this national celebration is a vibrant and colorful parade that draws together horse enthusiasts from across Costa Rica.

Originally a military horse parade in the early 19th century, El Tope has evolved into a celebration of the country’s equestrian traditions. Today, it is an important event on the Costa Rican calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from near and far.

The heart of El Tope is its horse parade, which typically takes place in the afternoon and extends well into the night. Dressed in traditional attire, riders from across Costa Rica come together for this festive occasion, adorning their horses with colorful decorations that create an electric atmosphere.

I use this sling backpack when I’m travelling in Costa Rica. It has a zipper lock to secure your stuff. I like the sling as I can flip the bag to the front for easy access.

    Food And More

Food is also a key part of the festival, with traditional Costa Rican dishes available for visitors to enjoy. Among the most popular are gallo pinto, a rice and beans dish, and chifrijo, which combines rice, beans, pork, and avocado. And, of course, visitors can indulge in a range of local drinks, including guaro, a beloved Costa Rican liquor.

El Tope is more than just a horse parade, however. It is a celebration of Costa Rican culture, with live music and dance performances complementing the horse parade. Arts and crafts vendors also offer handmade pottery, clothing, and other traditional items.

A family-friendly event, El Tope offers plenty of entertainment for children, too. Alongside the horse parade, carnival rides and games provide hours of fun, creating opportunities for families to bond and experience the richness of Costa Rican culture together.

Dreams Resort and El Jobo: Ultimate Beachfront Bliss

Looking for an amazing beach right beside an all inclusive resort in Costa Rica? Check out Playa El Jobo and the resort Dreams Las Mareas. This spot is on the northern Pacific side of Costa Rica in the Guanacaste Province. It’s about a two hour drive from the Liberia International Airport.

This area has plenty to see and do. There’s many beautiful beaches to explore, small fishing villages and excursions to inland areas. It’s also very close to the border of Nicaragua if you’re trip takes you north.

Be sure to check out our Packing List for great stuff that I use in Costa Rica. At the beaches it’s important to use sunscreen, check out the roll on option in the shop!monkey dreams las maraes

White faced monkey spotted in the trees at Dreams Las Maraes. There’s a lot of monkeys in the trees around the resort.

    Getting There

You’ll likely be starting your vacation landing at the Liberia Airport. This is a great airport that gets you closer to the beaches in Guanacaste, skipping the traffic around San Jose. From there head north along Highway #1 towards Nicaragua.  There are two way to get to El Jobo, the first is turning sooner off Highway #1 at Highway #14. This will take you a bit longer to arrive, but it’s worth the drive. You’ll head through several smalls towns, and have some amazing views to check out.

Be sure to stop at Mirador de Playa Bassey for an amazing view of the Gulf of Santa Elena. This road is very choppy and I recommend an SUV as there’s many gravel sections with potholes. The second route is to stay on Highway #1 for a bit longer, and turn in a town called La Cruz. This town has restaurants and shopping which are great to stock up on items you’ll need at the beach. Items for sale at Dreams Resort are very expensive, so be sure to think about what you’ll need while you’re in La Cruz.

Either way you take, you’ll arrive on the same road leading into Playa El Jobo. This road is also very pitted out and has tire-busting potholes, so drive carefully.

For more information about landing at Liberia Airport, check out our guide on the blog.

    Playa El Jobo

El Jobo is the beach that is in front of the resort. It’s a fantastic white sand beach with groomed sitting area. There’s lots of space to relax and hang out. The water itself is shallow, so it’s great for swimming. The beach is contained within a crescent bay, so you can expect at high and low tide to have calm conditions.

Given that the beach is public, you will find vendors there. From small trinkets to fishing charters/jet skis, you’ll be able to find something to do while you’re there. There’s a restaurant called Lapa Lapa which is open to the public just on the beach as well.

For parking, just drive past the front entrance to Dreams Resort, and you’ll find a small public lot. It’s a very short walk to access the beach from there.

    Dreams Las Mareas Costa Rica

Dreams is a 4 star all inclusive hotel that has great reviews and has very nice grounds. There’s lots of pools to check out with different vibes, and really nice accommodations.

The resort has well groomed grounds which are great for your wedding venue. We had seed a wedding set up at the pools and on the beach.

One of the best things to see is the many monkeys that hang out behind one of the buildings. We had the opportunity to see some white-faced capuchins. These curious creatures will come up and say hello, both at the trees and on your balcony. There’s also howler monkeys that hang out in the area.

On the day that we took this boat, it had picked up/dropped off passengers at both Playas del Coco and the Riu Guanacaste. In these locations on shore, you’ll meet the boat staff and get your wrist bands. This boat has a loading ramp and is able to pick you up right off the shoreline. Most boat cruises require taking a small dingy boat into deeper water to board.

  • Liberia Shopping: Big City Costa Rica

Liberia Shopping: Big City Costa Rica

Liberia is a medium sized city in Costa Rica, Guanacaste. It’s a 10 minute drive from the International Airport. If you’re heading to Playas del Coco or Tamarindo, Liberia is a great location to go shopping for some supplies and gear to get the best out of your trip.

Many coastal towns are sparse for shopping options. Liberia has lots to choose from: Supermarkets, Surplus Stores, Car Parts and Department Stores. It’s a larger town but never really feels too busy.

Our family enjoys heading into Liberia once in a while to walk the town, checking out thrift stores and art supply shops.

Check out our video of an ambient walk through Liberia to get a sense of the town HERE

El Rey – Super Discount Store

The first store we’ll check it is El Rey. This store is tucked back off the main road. It’s easy to miss as you drive by, but well worth stopping to check out.

It’s a store with just about everything. The part the kids love most is the massive section of candy. There’s treats we’ve not seen anywhere else, and the kids love grabbing some bags of candy.

El Rey has houseware at a price you’d see at dollar stores in North America. There’s some low price clothing as well. They also have a decent selection of small tools like screw drivers, drills and car parts.

    Ekono – Nice Department Store

Ekono is a department store that has a bit higher prices, but offers more trendy and higher quality items. You’ll find Ekono’s in larger cities like Liberia, San Jose, Puntarenas and Jaco.

A comparable store we had in Canada is The Bay, although Ekono’s are generally smaller. You’ll find similar stuff like clothing and houseware.

If you’re into fitness, you can also find some smaller items at Ekono. There’s quality yoga mats, kettlebells and dumbbells for your beach workouts. You can expect prices a bit higher than what you’d find on Amazon in North America, but that’s the case with most imported/heavy goods here in Costa Rica.

Ekono in Liberia is on the main road as well, a short walk up from El Rey. There’s lots of on street parking in the main road, as well as the side roads. Check out some of the restaurants in the area as well (Foodnication and Twenty’s are great options).

Toys! A Lot of Toys, Actually

Head north in town a few blocks and you’ll find the area of the bus terminals. There’s a lot of options for shopping around there, but the one that the kids love the most is Toys.

This three story toy store has loads and loads of toys, from building blocks, puzzles, toy cars, and stuffed figures. Kids really enjoy walking through the store and seeing all these toys in one place.

Toys is a very unique store in Costa Rica and we’re fortunate to have it so close to the beaches on the Pacific.

    Known For Surfing!

The west coast of Costa Rica is spotted with many beaches which are great for surfing. Tamarindo not only has big waves for the advanced, but also small waves for kids or beginners.

If you’re a beginner and want to get some lessons, there’s lots of options available. On our visit, we spoke with some of the lifeguards who pointed us in the right direction. The beach has lots of surf instructors who generally have the same offerings.

For each kid that took the class, we paid $40 USD. This included a surf board suitable for the size of the child. The lesson begins on the sand with how to stand on the board properly. Then the remainder of the time is spent in the water with an instructor.

    Kids Will Love it

The kids loved the surfing lessons. Having an instructor hold the board while the waves rolls in helps the students learn the basics of how to stand up properly.

We found the value of the lesson to be very good. If you want to practice surfing for the first time be sure to check out the awesome instructors on the beach in Tamarindo. If you’re going to catch some great videos pick up the latest GoPro for up close shots.

    Stay Safe In Tamarindo

Tamarindo is a very busy town, with lots of opportunity to explore and have fun. If you’re heading to the beach, be sure to leave your valuables in your hotel. Petty thefts do occur. Unless you’re sitting with your stuff, it’ll wander off. I’ve even had my cheap flip flops stolen while I was in the ocean in Costa Rica. If you’re travelling solo, grab a Waterproof Fanny-pack to store your hotel key and some spending money.

The night scene in Tamarindo is very fun and exciting as well. As the sun goes down, it seems as though everyone from town heads to the beach. The sunset is always amazing in Tamarindo. There’ll be fires lit up and the partying begins. If this is your scene, be sure to be safe. Stay with known friends and always know your way back to your accommodations.

Although tubes aren’t necessary, I recommend them for kids especially. If you’re a strong swimmer you’ll be able to easily swim your way up river. There’s multiple break spots along the way.

If you have water shoes or Five Fingers, I recommend bringing them. There’s cool spots you may want to check out along the rocks where more traction is beneficial.

    Reach The Waterfall

After you make it through the first enclosed cave, you’ll reach a nice break location. Here you’ll find a shallow area of the river which is great for taking a break.

There’s a massive exposed root system coming down from above. The kids loved climbing the roots and jumping into the river below. Be sure to always check for depth and submerged trees before the kids start jumping.

A little further along the river, you’ll encounter a cool double waterfall. This location is enclosed by rocks above. The current is strong, but with a tube the kids were able to enjoy it easily.

You’ll notice in the video and pictures that the water is a little more hazy that our previous videos. We visited in late May, after the rain has started picking up.

If you’re looking to visit Coyotes when it has the picturesque blue water, try around December – March. This is the dry season and there’s less sediment in the river.

Playas del Coco: Perfect Vacation Destination In Costa Rica

Playas del Coco is a well visited tourism location in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It has loads of accommodation options, as well as an assortment of restaurants and bars.

It’s the perfect home base for your vacation, with close proximity to many amazing beaches and other tours near Liberia.

    Accommodations

If you check out Airbnb and Booking.com for vacation rentals in Playas del Coco, you’ll find tons of options. There are two primary locations which are close to the main drag which offer differing distance to the beach and amenities.

    Pacifico

If you’re in the market for high end living, look at Pacifico for your rental. This expansive development has a wide assortment of units available, from houses with ocean views, to condos close to the pools. There’s a nearby gym called Longev, and Auto Mercado – a higher end grocery store.

Security is tight when entering Pacifico, with the guards checking all guests and deliveries. There are numerous pools and tennis courts on site, so you don’t have to come and go to enjoy the property.

    Las Palmas

When looking at the map, Las Palmas is the general area to the northern end of the beach. You’ll find many smaller sets of condos with open access. There’s roaming security guards in the area, and always lots of people walking around.

Most of the condos have pools, and there’s some close by restaurants and grocers. The great thing about staying in Las Palmas is the proximity to the beach – it’s only ever a few blocks away.

I use this sling backpack when I’m travelling in Costa Rica. It has a zipper lock to secure your stuff. I like the sling as I can flip the bag to the front for easy access.

    Restaurants

Coco is host to many amazing and unique restaurants. Although many are on the main drag and beach, the outlying areas also have great options. A few of my favorites are:

    Buzzed Monkey / Guayoyo

If you’re walking towards Las Palmas from the main drag, about half way you’ll find a small commercial center with numerous businesses. There’s a pharmacy, burger shop and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym. At the front you’ll also find Guayoyo Coffee House. They have incredible coffee selections, and all kinds of other hot beverages. You can also try out their baked goods, and items for sale from local vendors.

Directly in behind the commercial fronts, there’s a small restaurant called Buzzed Monkey BBQ & Grill. Buzzed Monkey is a BBQ joint that will consistently offer up the most succulent array of meats, if not in Playas del Coco alone, perhaps even in the world.

    Santorini Greek Restaurant

This is one of the most popular restaurants in Coco. It’s outdoor but fully covered, and the food is outstanding.

It’s a short walk from the beach, and is a perfect location to have a sit down meal at the end of a long day in the sun.

    Coconutz Brewhouse

Another restaurant that’s outdoor and fully covered. Coconutz is always teeming with friendly people, enjoying great food and drinks.

You’ll also being able to enjoy the nightlife of Coco at Coconutz, with it closing later and alcohol being served.

They have drop in pricing as well, so you can workout at The Gym as needed on your vacation.

    E-Bike Rental

You don’t need a car to get around Coco! In fact, renting a bicycle is an easy and efficient way to explore the town. If you’re taking a tour guide to the outlying destinations, a bike is a great option for the days of your vacation in Coco.

There’s also E-Bike options available, which are bicycles outfitted with a battery and electric throttle. It can make zipping along the beach paths a breeze, but still allows for pedaling.

  • Playa Buena: Beach Perfection

    Playa Buena: Beach Perfection

Playa Buena sits tucked into Culebra Bay near the Occidental Papagayo resort. This protected cove offers clear swimming waters with views across the bay to the Four Seasons Peninsula and Marina Papagayo.

A paved access road leads to parking, followed by a short walking path down to the beach. The cove setting provides shelter from ocean swells, making it suitable for swimming and relaxing in the calm waters. Natural forest surrounds the beach area, creating a secluded atmosphere.

Morning hours bring glassy conditions to the bay, perfect for swimming or watching boats cross between the marina and resorts. The beach remains less visited than neighboring Playa Panama, offering a quieter alternative for those seeking a peaceful cove setting.

    Easy Drive

Playa Buena is between the well known beach towns of Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama. If you’re driving from the south, you’ll be on Route 159, which is the main corridor along the coast in this area.

Once you pass Condovac in Playa Hermosa, you’ll look for a well maintained road which turns to the ocean(left). There are several resorts at the end of this road including Occidental Papagayo Adults Only, and Sol Papagayo.

Once you’re at the entrance of Occidental, there is a Y junction in the road that has ample street parking. You may also find a local parking attended, so be sure to have a couple thousand Colon for him to watch your vehicle.

    Walking The Path

Some beaches in Costa Rica are rather adventurous to access. Playa Buena is no such beach. The path is laid brick which is easy to traverse. It’s also wide so you can carry some wider equipment if you have it.

A great option for any beach adventure is always a Backpack Cooler, which allows you to free up your hands to carry other beach essentials.

The walk to the beach from the parking area is very short, so it’s a great location if you have young kids.

    playa buena walking path

    White Sand, Great View

This beach is fantastic for the whole family. There’s a massive beach area at low tide, and the water was breaking very easy.

Off in the distance you’ll be able to see the volcano range that lies behind Liberia. You’re also going to be able to see the resorts around the bay like Planet Hollywood and The Four Seasons.

On the occasion of filming, it was particularly windy out. This caused some dirt to be kicked up in the water around the shore. Snorkeling in these conditions wasn’t great, but on a calmer day there’s lots of tide pools and rocks which will make for clear views of all the sea life.

You’ll also be able to rent Jetski’s on this beach, we were quoted at $50 USD for half an hour. There was also a couple getting a massage on the beach during our time there. Surely the increase in tourist traffic from the nearby resorts increases the services offered on the beach.

  • Playa Zapotillal

    Playa Zapotillal

West of Playa Conchal, a rutted dirt road leads to one of Guanacaste’s less visited white sand beaches. Playa Zapotillal sits between rocky headlands, offering clear water swimming and hiking trails with incredible coastal views.

The beach combines a wide sandy area perfect for relaxing with natural features to explore. At low tide, you can check out caves in the rock formations, while a short trail leads to viewpoints overlooking neighboring beaches and the blue Pacific waters below.

Unlike busy Playa Conchal nearby, Zapotillal’s harder access keeps visitor numbers lower. The 4×4 road naturally limits traffic, though determined drivers in regular cars sometimes make the journey slowly. A parking attendant watches vehicles, and basic facilities exist for day visits.

    How To Get There

    From Matapalo Town

Matapalo serves as your last stop for supplies before heading to the beach. This small town sits between Tamarindo and Playas del Coco, making it a good reference point. Several small stores and sodas offer chances to grab water and snacks.

The drive from town starts on maintained gravel roads. During dry season (December-April), dust kicks up easily, so keep distance between vehicles. Green season might need more careful driving, but the main road stays passable.

    Key Junction Points

After several minutes on the main gravel road, you’ll reach an important junction marked by Hotel Condor Lodge and Villas La Paz. These properties offer views over Playa Conchal and help mark your turn. If heading to Conchal, you’d continue right, but for Zapotillal, turn left.

This intersection serves as the decision point – the easier road to Conchal or the adventurous route to Zapotillal. Several flags and hotel signs mark the spot, making it easier to find.

    Final Approach

About 1 kilometer after the junction, look for a gap in a gate – this marks the turn toward Zapotillal. The road condition changes significantly here, with deep ruts and rough sections requiring careful driving.

While some regular cars attempt this section, high clearance and 4×4 make the journey much easier. Take your time on this stretch, watching for oncoming vehicles as the road narrows in sections. The rough drive helps keep the beach quieter than nearby spots.

    The Beach

    Swimming & Sand

The white sand beach curves between rocky points, creating a protected swimming area. Unlike some nearby beaches, Zapotillal’s waters stay relatively calm near shore, making it good for families. The wide beach offers plenty of space for setting up, even during high tide.

Several shady spots along the beach edge provide relief from the sun. The clear waters make it perfect for spotting marine life – sea turtles sometimes appear offshore, and the rocky points attract fish.

    Hidden Caves & Tide Pools

At low tide, you can explore caves in the western rocky point. These natural formations create interesting photo opportunities and exploring spots. Always check tide charts before venturing to the caves, as high tide cuts off access.

Small tide pools form among the rocks during low tide. These protected spots offer glimpses of small fish and marine life. The beach’s natural features give kids plenty to discover.

    Beach Activities

Pack a cooler and plan to spend the day, as the journey here is worth taking time to enjoy. The beach’s position facing west makes it perfect for sunset viewing. During low tide, you can walk far along the beach, exploring different swimming spots.

The small river mouth creates a peaceful spot to cool off, especially for kids. You’ll often see small fish in the clear water here. The beach’s natural curves create different areas to find your own space.

playa zapotillal beachtrail shoes for costa rica

I use these versatile trail runners on my hikes in Costa Rica. The aggressive grip tackles steep terrain while maintaining comfort for long days on mountain paths.

    The Viewpoint Hike

    Getting Started

The hiking trail begins at the western end of the beach, marked by a natural path heading up the headland. A wire rope helps with the initial climb, making it manageable for most visitors. The first section takes about 10 minutes, leading to an impressive overlook of Zapotillal beach below.

Watch your footing on the initial climb as the path can be dusty in dry season. Early morning or late afternoon provides better hiking conditions, avoiding the strongest sun. Bring water and wear good shoes, as flip-flops aren’t ideal for the terrain.

    Upper Trail Section

After the first viewpoint, the trail continues along a wider path sometimes used by ATV tours. This section offers easier walking, with several natural platforms for taking in the views. You’ll find spots where you can see both north and south along the coastline.

The path winds around the headland, revealing different angles of the coastline. Each turn brings new perspectives of the rocky shore below and neighboring beaches in the distance. On clear days, you can spot multiple beach coves stretching toward Playa Conchal.

    Summit Views

The final lookout point rewards hikers with panoramic ocean views. From here, you can see the entire sweep of Zapotillal beach and several hidden coves to the south. The dramatic rocky coastline below shows why this area remains less developed than nearby beaches.

This vantage point provides perfect photo opportunities, especially in morning light when visibility is best. The whole hike takes about 30 minutes round trip, not counting time spent enjoying the views. Some visitors bring snacks to enjoy at the top while watching for marine life in the clear waters below.

    Nearby City: Liberia

    Getting There

Liberia sits about 90 minutes from Playa Zapotillal. Daniel Oduber International Airport serves the region, making Liberia your likely arrival point. The city offers last-chance shopping and services before heading to beach areas.

    City Services

Liberia provides all major amenities: Large supermarkets (Walmart, MaxiPali), Medical facilities including private hospitals, Banks with ATMs, Car rentals, and Hardware stores. Stock up here before heading to beach towns, as prices typically run lower than coastal areas.

Shopping & Supplies Several shopping centers offer everything needed for beach trips:

    • Plaza Santa Rosa (major stores and restaurants)
    • Plaza Commercial Liberia (banks and shops)
    • Central market for fresh produce
    • Multiple gas stations along main highway

    Transportation Hub

Liberia serves as a major transport connection:

    • International airport with regular flights
    • Bus terminal linking to beach towns
    • Major highways in all directions
    • Rental car offices near airport
    • Multiple taxi services
